History

Before the introduction of postage stamps

Before the first postage stamp was introduced to the world in 1847, after a letter was taken to a post office to be mailed, the postmaster noted the postage in the upper right corner. Postage is calculated based on the number of pages in the letter and the distance it travels. Postage can be paid in advance to the addressee and collected on delivery.

The world's first postage stamp

In 1837, Sir Rowland Hill of Great Britain proposed uniform postage for letters to anywhere in the British Isles and prepaid using envelopes with pre-printed postage or adhesive labels. The first postage stamps for UK letter postage were sold in May 1840. Known as the Penny Black, the stamp covered the one-penny fee for a half-ounce letter, while the Two Penny Blue covered the two-penny fee. For articles as much as one ounce. Because it was the first to be sold, the Penny Black is considered the world's first postage stamp

On April 01, 1857, a postage stamp was issued for the first time in Sri Lanka. This stamp was made using the head image of Queen Victoria and was sold for 6 pence at that time.

The first postage stamp was printed in Sri Lanka on 15 March 2002. It was issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Lankan Gazette. This stamp was printed at the Government Press.
